The Homer Spit
A 4.5-mile long geographical landmark located on the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula, jutting out into Kachemak Bay. The spit is a hub of activity each summer, humming with tourists, charter boats, beachcombers, shoppers, and diners.
Kachemak Bay State Park
Alaska’s first state park is home to mountains, glaciers, forests, and coastal scenery. The park’s outstanding beauty makes it a top destination. Visitors will find opportunities for fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking, and mountain sports.
Islands and Ocean Visitor Center
Home of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, the Center offers exhibits and films about marine mammals and seabirds that inhabit the Alaska coast. Walking trails from the Center lead to Beluga Slough and Bishop’s Beach. A great way to explore.
Gull Island
As many as 20,000 seabirds nest in the craggy rock faces and cliffs of Gull Island, about three miles off the Homer Spit in Kachemak Bay. Charter boat operators offer bird-watching tours to the island that often include great sightings of sea otters.
Carl E. Wynn Nature Center
The nature center, located on the bluffs above Homer, is a 140-acre reserve featuring interpretive trails focusing on native flora and fauna. The visitor center displays additional exhibits and offers daily, naturalist-led hikes throughout the summer.
Pratt Museum
An award-winning regional museum offering exhibits, programs, and events exploring life around Kachemak Bay. You also can explore an historic homestead cabin, forest trails, and a native plant garden. The museum’s mission is to preserve “the stories of the Kachemak Bay region”.
Halibut Cove
Originally a fishing village, Halibut Cove is now home to artists, businesses, and one of the only floating U.S. post offices around. The community, located 12 miles across Kachemak Bay from Homer, is accessible by boat only, making it a fun side trip.
Bishop’s Beach Park
Don’t miss a chance to enjoy this wide, sandy beach. Sit on the sand and soak up some sun; search for agates and Alaskan jade. Visit after dinner for a beautiful sunset walk. Bishop’s Beach is a fun place to let the kids run or fly a kite.
